“SCRIPT ARCHAEOLOGY” CONSULTANT SERVICE
Over the last twenty-five years writing and reading tons of screenplay, I have developed a form of script coverage I like to call “Script Archaeology.” I dig for the characters, emotional arcs, and beats of a screenplay, then ensure they are formed into the correct shape for the story it is seeking to tell. After uncovering the emotional foundation at the heart of the screenplay, I can work with clients to ensure the flow and details of a screenplay align with the intent of their story.
This approach is rigorous and meticulous, and no matter the screenplay type (half-hour, hour, feature), it’s likely to produce the most detailed script notes you’ve seen in your whole life.
How does "Script Archaeology" work?
1. Read & Evaluate Your Material
This allows me to get acquainted with the style, topic, genre, tone, and theme(s) of your screenplay. At this point, I can offer feedback in broad strokes: target and identify areas and elements in your script that could use further refinement.
2. Story Analysis
- Story Structure: I track the character arcs and larger story arcs to ensure that they all feed into the theme(s) of the script and have a beginning, middle, and end.
- Themes & Alignment: I track the details of the emotional voice in your script to ensure that they line up with the themes of the larger story. I ensure that nothing feels “out of place” bumping against the goals of the script.
3. Shaping
- Characters: I track and note character details that aren’t fully developed or are out of alignment with their service to the story. This helps ensure your characters are authentic, unique, and fresh.
- Dialogue: I offer notes on how to punch up, polish, or remove dialogue to match character and service the flow of your script. This includes suggestions on how to re-order scenes for maximum effect.
- Brainstorming: I also offer creative notes on ways of fixing issues in your script: solutions to story problems, inventing and re-inventing ways of navigating the story; all matched to the intent and voice of the original writing, of course!
4. Writing (if you want)
Don’t have time to deal with implementation of the notes? I am also a seasoned ghostwriter, and I am happy to help to whatever extent you might need.
